Absentee Ballots

Any eligible registered Chatham County voter who wishes to vote by absentee ballot may do so. No reason is required.

Be sure to check My Voter Page to confirm that you are registered!

You must fill out and submit an official absentee ballot request form/application in order to be sent an absentee ballot.


How to obtain an absentee ballot request form/application:

Here are the various ways to get your official absentee ballot request form:

  • You can download an absentee ballot request form/application that you can print out and fill in,
    OR
  • You may contact the Chatham County Voter Registration Office and ask them to send you a request form/application ( 912-790-1520 )
    OR
  • You may drop by the Voter Registration Office and fill out your absentee ballot request form/application there in person. ( 1117 Eisenhower Dr, Suite E, Savannah, GA 31406. Monday – Fri 8 AM – 5 PM)
    • NOTE: You must file a separate application for each election and run-off election for which you are requesting an absentee ballot; except if you are a voter who is over the age of 65 or disabled, a military service member, spouse of a military service member, or an oversees citizen (temporary or permanent). If so, you can request to have ballots sent to you for all elections in the election cycle.


How to submit your completed absentee ballot request form/application:

Your completed absentee ballot request form/application may be submitted to the Voter Registration Office any time beginning 78 days prior to an election – but it must be received by 11 days prior to Election Day. You have several options:

  • You may mail your completed request form ( PO Box 13757, Savannah, GA 31416). Allow at least 5 days for delivery.
    OR
  • You may scan and e-mail your completed form to absenteeballots@chathamcounty.org
    OR
  • You may FAX your completed form to the Voter Registration office. ( 912-790-1519 )
    OR
  • You may deliver it in person at the Voter Registration Office during regular business hours ( 1117 Eisenhower Dr, Suite E, Savannah, GA 31406 )


When absentee ballots will be sent out:

The Voter Registration office will begin sending out absentee ballots 3 to 4 weeks prior to an election. If you wish to confirm that your request for an absentee ballot was received, you can check its status at My Voter Page


How to cast your absentee ballot:

Absentee ballots must be received by the Office of Voter Registration by 7 PM on Election Day in order to be counted. Again there are several options:

  • You may mail in your completed absentee ballot to the Voter Registration Office (Address below) One first class stamp is sufficient. Allow at least 5 days for delivery.
    OR
  • You may deliver it in person to the Voter Registration Office during business hours (Address and hours below)
    OR
  • You may drop it into one of the three official drop boxes that will be accessible during early in-person voting. (Important: Drop boxes are only accessible during early voting hours.) The drop box locations are:
    • Voter Registration Office (1117 Eisenhower Dr, Suite E)
    • Mosquito Control Board (65 Billy B. Hair Drive)
    • Islands Library (50 Johnny Mercer Blvd.)


Important Information for Military and Overseas Voters

Due to the passage of Senate Bill 202 (SB202) by the Georgia General Assembly in March 2021, voters are now required to put their birth date AND Georgia Driver's License or State ID Card number on the absentee ballot application.

In the event that you are a military or overseas voter who has neither one of these numbers, the new law requires you to submit a copy of one of the following documents as proof of your identity with your application form:

Identification with your photograph:

  • U.S. Military identification card
  • Employee identification card issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the U.S. government, Georgia state government, or Georgia county, municipality, board, authority, or any other entity of the state of Georgia.
  • Georgia voter identification card
  • United States passport
  • Tribal identification card

Documents that show your name and address:

  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Government check
  • Paycheck
  • Other government document

Early (Advance) Voting In Person

Early in-person voting begins 21 days prior to the General Primary / Special Election.

Any eligible registered voter desiring to vote in advance during this period may do so in-person at any of the early voting locations. (You do not have to vote in your assigned precinct for early voting.)

No reason is required for early voting.


Election Day Voting In Person

On Election Day you must cast your vote at your assigned precinct poll location.

Prior to Election Day — confirm your registration and poll location by calling Voter Registration at 912-790-1520 or use the website poll locator at My Voter Page. You can also review a sample of your ballot on My Voter Page so you can be better prepared to vote in person.
